BluePixel - the best iOS designer news client (itunes.apple.com)

Interesting.
Looks like a blatant copy of Subpixel: http://subpixelapp.com/, even the name. Not much innovation in this one.
Also, I found a tweet related to this app: https://twitter.com/CocoaMarcel/status/548945152983977985
Subpixel ripped off the design Ed Wellbrook did for Hack Later app with @mertdumenci. It's hilarious you are complaining :))
Update: "Why is this such a big deal? This guy isn't making millions off of the app. META: Every design ever is a copy of something else. Many startups choose to copy certain elements from another company because it was successfully implemented. There's not wrong in copying something that works.
With that being said, this is not a blatant copy. It's simply rows of data on a white background, with similar (read: commonly used. I'll find examples if this post gets any attention ) icons."
Are you seriously justifying copying something just because the thing you are copying was a copy of something else?
uhhh
Yikes. And that tweet threat is bad news.
Also looks similar to MobileDN...
I'm ok with the fact that these all look so similar. What's important is that it doesn't look like Alien Blue.
They all have clean typography, blue/white color pallettes and fonts similar to Avenir... just like Designer News I suppose.
Honestly, at this point in the game I fail to see how any new Designer News app could claim it's "innovative". It's been done already and you can't do much outside of the API — add the fact that DN's mobile site is perfectly usable, and it makes me wonder why we would need 5-6 different apps for the same forum.
Sure, it can still be useful to others and I'm sure it's a fun project to build + a good portfolio piece. But don't try to sell yet another DN reader like it's the last popsicle in the desert; we have a bunch of those in the fridge.
they're iOS clients for DN. odds are they're going to look similar.
Not the first time.
http://web.archive.org/web/20140517004044/http://adune.co/ logo is a rip of Addy Osmanis
Ha, he tried to get me to design Adune and to rebrand it. I'm assuming he wouldn't have paid me. Glad I sensed something amiss and backed out.

This is not the best DN App. The best one is DN Paper.. And stop ripping people off. It's not the first time you are doing this. You contacted me as well, glad I declined.
And me, lame...
I agree, DN Paper is my favourite too but really I use the mobile web, it works flawlessly and I don't think there is a need for an app at all.

I really don't want to give this guy attention but I feel the need to clarify and emphasize a few points.
1) Nearly all of his "work" is a blatant copy of someone else's work. We've all seen it firsthand in this thread and with Adune.
2) He's deceitful, more so than any person has any reason or right to be. He has tried to get multiple people (including me) to work with him. I sensed something fishy so I backed out and just stopped replying. Thankfully I didn't get dragged any further into this.
3) Gianluca seems to be using his age as a defense or an excuse. That is wrong. I'm 18 as well. Do I use my age as an excuse for anything? No, I absolutely do not. Do I include it in my bio to, ostensibly, try to impress people (i.e. "18 y/o Inventor.")? No, I absolutely do not. Age has no bearing on this situation. Perhaps in the sense that he is immature and has not learned how to be ethical and/or honest, but that is certainly no excuse.
4) This: https://twitter.com/GianlucaRispo/status/556817657211944960, this https://twitter.com/CocoaMarcel/status/556789785634037761, and the numerous exchanges between Gianluca and Marcel on Twitter. Let those conversations speak for themselves.
5) I value privacy so I won't post a screenshot, but he just iMessaged me and tried to talk me out of speaking out against his blatant stealing and fraud. I don't even know what to say right now.
I'll let you all take the evidence into consideration and form your own opinions. However, I believe that Gianluca is unethical and dishonest; I caution you all against working with him — I wish someone had cautioned me and the numerous other people he deceived.
Oops! I posted this form the wrong DN account (one I created long ago for a project that I've since abandoned).
This is just me taking ownership of the above reply.

Really enjoyed this app in beta but seeing Marcel's twitter threads is deeply upsetting.
Not willing to support it anymore and I hope others will respect Marcel's situation aswell.
Pay Marcel. Or pull the app.
+1
No payment was settled. We were partners.
That's actually wrong. We wanted to share revenues but you put it on the store for free (we already talked about a price).
In the end you decided to not take any credit, and you said "The app is yours, I don't care anymore". Unfortunately this is how it ended up, sincerely I would have liked you to stay onboard.
You wonder why I quit? Working with you is horrible and most of the stuff you "designed" is stolen. I had to ask like 10 times for simple things etc. You even tried to steal a default avatar (tried because I used Google Images for reverse search and I found the exact same avatar). I told you several times to stop stealing other people's work but you either replied with random quotes from Steve Jobs or replied with "Ethics, huh?".
Another thing is that I still expected that you would sell the app (as we planned). I mean, I wouldn't recommend anyone to buy clones but I feel ripped though.
For example, here is a quick comparison of MobileDN and BluePixel:
It's obvious that you stole from other people. Stop denying it.
”Saying its exactly the same seems to be fairly misplaced critique on for 2 reasons
1.Its like critiquing a twitter client for using the twitter logo. DN Seems to have no issue with people using their logo for 3rd party clients so people do.
2.They aren't very similar MobileDN has a very harsh blue, and flipping the logo actually makes it flow a lot better visually guiding my eye through the icon.
Design is all about small details that in the grand scheme of things make big impacts. This is one of the better DN app icons I've seen to date.”
You seriously justify it with these arguments? Where are the small details in BluePixel? Everyone knows (and especially sees) that it is a clone made without any love (or details).
Guys, this isn't Facebook. Everyone has made their argument and it should be left at that - there is nothing to gain by egging this on further. Save your dignity and move on.
Private matters are best suited for email :)
Hey man,
Nice work on the app, have you thought about maybe designing your own icon rather than using a sample from the DN one? Might help give it it's own standing on the homescreen, at the moment the app and icon kind of don't match :) Good work though man!
+1 on the icon
And paying the developer he used to make a clone. Really unfortunate. This guy iMessaged me about this too and I'm glad I declined. He's not getting very far by screwing people over like this.
Is it safe to share my credentials and use this app? Above comments are not so welcoming, hence.
What scares you? It just uses Layervaul APIs so you are 100% safe :))
Ok. It would be cool if you can come clean on the allegations raised in the above comments. Credits where it's due is a harmless gesture IMO.
If you have doubts, MobileDN is basically the exact same app.
Really? And where's the customization? Appearance settings? The night mode?
Mobile DN has a theme called "Gold Standard" that works better for me than BluePixel's Night Mode (the gold and black remind me of Deus Ex, which is awesome), and you can choose a few fonts to use.
Hey Paul, I'm glad you're enjoying the Gold Standard theme, however, I think you're referring to DN Paper (https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/dn-paper-designer-news/id900297829?mt=8), not Mobile DN :)
Haha, I am! I love this app so much, it's awesome.
Whoops. :P
"Why is this such a big deal? This guy isn't making millions o ff of the app. META: Every design ever is a copy of something else. Many startups choose to copy certain elements from another company because it was successfully implemented. There's not wrong in copying something that works.

This app is the ultimate hybrid ripoff between Subpixel and MobileDN. Way too far, and definitely not the first time for "Gianluca Rispo".
I'm sorry that there is a rumour that I didn't pay the developer. In the end Marcel decided he didn't want to take any credit, and said "The app is yours, I don't care anymore". Unfortunately this is how it ended up, and I would have liked for Marcel to stay onboard.
He's literally on this thread arguing otherwise
@GianlucaRispo Why was I added to your mailing list? This is something I did not subscribe to and would of not done. Email blasting people is not kind and totally uncalled for.
Awesome ! :) but I have a little critique... when you swipe to like or comment the table cell returns as if my gesture was unsuccessful. This is not how it is supposed to be It should swipe all the way and once I release it to give me visual feedback that the gesture was successful.
Please fix that! I cannot use it like that, it's driving me crazy...

I love the night mode. The comment section could use some work- the font appears too big on the iPhone 6. The News app is a good example of what a nice comment section should look like.
This is the best DN client, i use BluePixel since beta testing on TestFlight.
Thanks Ray!
1) I am still young, I am learning and I didn't want to offend/upset anyone.
2 )After some research, you might want to know that Colby Ludwig blatantly copied Hack Later by Ed Wellbrook and Mert Dumenci (just for the record), just changing the colors.
3) Whoever says the icon is a ripoff from MobileDN, it's just the layer vault logo. As someone wrote:
”Saying its exactly thesameseems to be fairly misplaced critique on for 2 reasons

Thanks for clarifying some things.
However, if you're old enough to make websites, set up groups on Slack, and release iOS apps, you know the difference between right and wrong. Sounds like you're using your age as an excuse.
Additionally, what you are saying (or not saying) is different from a lot of what I'm seeing on Twitter from Colby, Marcel, and other iOS devs you've allegedly contacted. Marcel alludes to writing about this situation on his new blog soon, so I guess we'll see what he has to say.
Anyhoo, good luck with the app! Hopefully, this situation won't prevent you from making more apps, but at least you'll learn something either way.
There's an error upon connecting with the Pocket API
Congrats on the release!
Thanks Kelly!
