Do you all still design them? I feel like most of the sites I go to don't put any effort into them. Personally, I love designing these pages.
Definitely. For Noodles, a cooking app, the error pages have "500. Our Noodles are in a bit of a tangle.” I think they really show off your brand and are a great opportunity to have some extra fun.

Yeah :) Our main feature is to "Pick" articles, so I used the Pick circle that's also in our logo in a quick illustration

If not, I suggest you spend time on more valuable things.
Having fun is more valuable than it sounds. When you're having fun making your site, it shows through to the user - and the user thinks you're fun. The user thinks you're a fun site and you've got personality and a fun team.
I disagree. You can build a really nice set of error pages in half an hour, and they extend your brand greatly when something happens. While maybe it isn’t technically “valuable” it adds so much to the UX.
