Ask DN: Is anyone on the #Startup Slack IRC? Is it worth paying to join?

almost 7 years ago from , Product Designer

Referring to this http://www.hashtagstartup.co which I saw on HN a little bit ago. I was applying to join and was under the impression that you could apply for free or pay for immediate access, but it seems like now you must pay to join (or perhaps I was wrong about the free option in the past).

Are there any DNers who are in the #Startup community? Is it worthwhile?

Paying for access to a community has never really made sense to me, to be honest. It's not like there's a lack of free communities out there?

I also believe that there aren't that many problems in life whose solution is "I should be spending more time chatting online"…

Though there isn't a lack of free communities out there, from my experience it's hard to find communities that are active, well-managed & well-moderated.

Going with Jim Rohn's ethos "you are the average of the 5 people you hang out with the most," getting access to a high quality community may really make the difference for a budding entrepreneur/designer/whatever have you.

The potential for accountability is huge. I think that's why Justin Jackson's Product People sold out so quick:

Completely useless so far — lots of wannapreneurs and pointless self-promotion. What would expect from such boards in the first place? People who actually produce stuff don't hang out on pseudo networking sites.

A friend is in there. Most of the time people are trying to find partners to help them with their half-assed, unfinished products. Not that much advice exchange as you'd expect.

When I see these I wonder if they just don't realize that IRC exists, but then it makes more sense when I see they are trying to charge users for access. It's brilliant!
