I'm a tool whore, always hunting for something shiny to use. But I'm having trouble seeing how LV beats using Dropbox + InVision, which also provides me with light (generally sufficient) prototyping. Can anyone talk me into LayerVault? Please? :)

      Hi Lee,

Fair question. We don't do prototyping, and that's on purpose. There are a bunch of folks out there that do it well, as evidenced by this blog post linked to on DN last week. For us, it's a question of time and focus.

LayerVault is built first and foremost for design teams out there, which is why you'll see us displaying layer comps for PSDs, artboards for AIs, and do things like automatic asset-exporting for a few file formats. With today's release, we'll also tell you how much time you've spent on a project's files, which can help inform any billable hours computations.

Our customers aren't shy, either. Take a look at some of our testimonials.

        Many thanks for the response.

InVision also does the automatic asset extraction, as well as automatically creating PNGs out of layer comps (or layers/groups).

So I think it'd have to come down to reliability, really. I've had issues with InVisions automatic export, and with features like its LiveShare.

In the end, LV would have be in addition to my existing tools, not instead. So I'll remain planted on this fence. :)

    Any closer to inDesign?

Will be added to our slate for 2015.

It's a difficult format to work with, and we wanted to take a release or two to smooth things out for current customers.

Before then, though, you can hack it a bit. We'll generate high-fidelity previews for PDF files, and still version InDesign files. Just export to PDF whenever you have something you want to show off.

Read the post, some nice updates here.

Still find it a bit crazy you can't view feedback on something in the preview mode. For anyone not designing mobile apps, it's often hard to tell what someone is referring to. Or that Artboard names aren't taken across?

Overall though very happy with the updates, great work.

The last time I tried layervault, there was a significant delay when viewing files on web. Especially when switching between layer comps. I'm hoping that's fixed with the v3 update. Will give it another try.

    Congrats on the launch!

Congratulations on the launch! Going to try it out with the starter plan. Currently we're using a combination of Quip and Dropbox for design/feedback.

Great update! I'm a bit confused by the hours count, could you explain based on what it is calculated?

Right now it mostly feels like a number that is just thrown there, and I'm not exactly sure what information I can glean from it and also how much I can trust it.

Explaining (even just roughly) how it is calculated might help :)

      Hi Gabriele,

Without going into too much detail around the math behind it, it's simply a number of how much time you have spent on the files in each project. It accounts for breaks that you might take. As long as a project's work happens within the folder, you'll get accurate results.
