What is the best portfolio you've ever seen?

I love how the examples of his work scroll with mouseover - the motion is so subtle, and the easing is gorgeous. The way that extends to the buttons is also fantastic.

Are we talking about the work inside the portfolio or the portfolio platform itself? Cause those are two separate things.

In that case I must disclose that I'm a big fan of Steven Heller's approach to portfolio building.
You must keep it as minimal and as product-focused at possible. Not because "the product speaks for itself", but because the people you're showing it too might be busy and not have time to wait for it to load too much or deal with all your snazzy and sometimes useless animations and effects.
Basically if you're looking for real-life implementations of his principles, any of the portfolios featured in CargoCollective's main page are OK with me.

While I somewhat agree, I'll also have to somewhat disagree.
In my opinion, it all depends on the specific job/discipline your focused on. If you're a traditional artist or graphic designer, Heller's approach might be appropriate. But, what if you're a front end JavaScript developer? Shouldn't your portfolio show some of your skills?
I agree 100% that useless animations and effects are, well, useless. But I think there is a tolerance for it. As designers, isn't it our job to find that line?
The portfolios in the "favorites" link all seem modern to me. There is nothing wrong with them, I like the style. I'm just saying there is more than one approach.
I was giving the answer with graphic artists in mind. For developers I don't really think a portfolio is really that useful. I don't know how it's where you live but here where I'm from most programming jobs require you to take a test. If you have some open source projects in a GitHub account than most of times people don't even bother testing you. They have all they need in your GitHub code.
But developers are birds of a different feather. Sometimes you have guys like Dan Eden or Drew Wilson that can do the graphics, frontend and backend on their own, and then you have people that specialize just in Ruby, C++, or even working on something super niche like caching HTTP requests.
If were talking about the first category then a mix between graphic portfolios and in-depth case studies is a must for describing their entire process. If we're talking about the second category, then code snippets are a must.

Lots of attention to detail.
- Hover over the logo on the top left.
- Animation of the logo on the homepage hero.
- Scroll down to the footer and see the beating heart.
Remarkable, inspiring work. Just about everything in that portfolio is absolutely gorgeous

This newly finished site by Basic Agency is definitely one of, if not my favourite of all time. The design, most notably on the case studies, really is at such a high level.
