    This is crap advice.

Thinking you're smart and offering a shitty design might work sometimes, but it frames your client as stupid and someday will nicely blow up in your face when they select it. Congrats, you're the designer making intentionally bad stuff.

It's always a good idea to do three times as much work as you should be doing.

This is exactly the opposite of how you win a client over.

Also giving three options is the worst advice ever. Especially the part about intentionally creating a "bad" version of your design so the clients picks the "good" one. What if the clients picks the terrible one or wants to mix and match? You will end up with a camel.

Lesson of the day: Never show work you don't want the client to use.

Should you not make a design the client likes, instead of making a design and then having to get the client to like it?

I've seen this a few times lately - shitty advice to intentionally create a "bad design" in order to trick your client into accepting something else.

No. * smack * Bad. Bad designer. NO.

Never show your client something you are not comfortable with them selecting because they will choose the design you dislike the most.

If you have to trick your client, you're doing design wrong.

If you have to create a "bad design" to uplift your "good" design, then your "good" design isn't good.

This isn't how you build trust. This isn't how you build a solid relationship with your client.
