It sounds nice. It looks horrid. Monospaced body type?
Try Sublevel instead. It looks amazing on any OS or device.
sublevel feels so empty
I disagree, I like the aesthetic they're going for.
In general I agree, or at least, I think the idea is good even if the execution isn't great yet. But monospaced body type is just bad. There are proportional fonts that can work within the "minimal/rebellious/DIY" aesthetic they've got going, and won't hinder legibility.
Yeah, monospaced kills it for me.
ello focuses on another kind of aesthetic and design approach, one that not comes from screendesigners, but more from the top notch editorial design field. monospaced fonts are a definitely a valid choice you can make in your print design, aswell as in editorial-like-screen design nowadays.
Well if you can't read it, it doesn't change a thing how valid a choice it can be.
I'm talking about blocks of text here. Short headlines or nav elements are nice but body text becomes a pain to simply read.
Editorial designers even more than screen designers have historically put weight on legibility as a key concern for body text. Not sure what you're getting at. This is fashion over function, whichever aesthetic background it's drawing on.
Exactly that. Sometimes it's good not to follow all UX/UI rules, just to make another product that makes all KPIs and VCs go “Wow!”. There's more in life and aesthetics than a “perfect” UX design.
And you don't want to tell me that you can't read mono-spaced text, or? Maybe not as “easy” as a with one of the standard boring screen typefaces nowadays, but yes, I think you can read it pretty well, or not?
I wouldn't say "horrid" myself, just different. I don't mind the monospace at all. It doesn't feel commercial or like I'm being marketed to, which is completely in line with their stated goals. So in that sense, I'd say the typography nails it.
Sounds is right. It doesn't look or work nice in my experience thus far. Ouch.
meh I'm already over it. just twitter for me
so it's a worse version of app.net with no business model. but hey, pretty.

What is even the future of Ello?
I think this whole fear of selling data to advertisers is way overblown.
I have AdBlock, so what few ads get through better be relevant to me! I mean really, what's the worst they can do besides make shit more relevant to your desires?
I see Ello following the same path as Diaspora, initial interest and then people realize that Facebook has value in its scale, and monetization IS ACTUALLY IMPORTANT. Then bye bye Ello.
If you don't want to pay for something, don't complain if they take the only reasonable route to making money to grow and support it.
Ello has gone viral and we are temporarily freezing invitations for new users. This allows us to make sure that Ello remains stable as the network continues to grow.
Check back here for updates — we promise to give you more invites as soon as we can!
Soon as it's back up folks I'll email invites.
Woke up to an invite this morning, thanks Chris!
No problem :)
I've got a whole load to give away....

Do you still have invites for Ello? I'd love to try it. surjithctly [at] gmail.com

Thank you!
I agree with Toby, the website design could use some work. Just one example: the homepage gives no indication as to what ello even is. When you click the "about" link, you are not taken to an about page, you are instead given a bunch of links. The fact that there is a "WTF" badge next to the group of links is extremely appropriate, as that is exactly what I felt like.
I have a few invites left, if anyones interested
me! me!

Invites are frozen :(
In general what is everyone's feeling about ello.co?
I think the manifesto is great- but the execution feels too much like a tumblr replica. I also find my self a bit confused as how I actually become 'social' on there.
I feel like a more conventional social network that didn't have ads would be nice! And that ello could be that. But that right now it's not it.
It's, to me, kind of like a combination of ffffound and twitter.
If anyone else has any invites, this feels like my kinda jam.
I'm not sure why people are complaining about the monospacing. I feel in this context, it lends itself well.
jam you say..
check your inbox ;–)
I haven't really tried it yet but I do have some invites left. What's you're e-mail address?
I would love to try it out, you can send me an invite at robbertesser@gmail.com if you want to.
