Ask DN: Program to Create Mood Boards?

almost 9 years ago from , Designer at Chef'n

Hey DN!

I am at work and we always make mood boards in Illustrator by throwing all our photos in and making rectangles and clipping them. It so so time consuming though.

I like Inboard because you can throw all the photos in and drag sliders to make the pictures bigger and smaller or closer and farther, but you can't export that as as laid out mood board.

Can anyone recommend something to create moodboards by uploading photos and being able to rearrange with the click of a button or sliders, thanks!!

Niice.co recently added a moodboard feature similar to what you're talking about, if you don't mind it being in the browser.

I have been here before and it's just an accumulation of other sites, do they have a different feature I can't find?

I want to be able to upload my stuff and have it generate me a 8.5" x 11" or 11" x 17" or whatever size mood that I can then use sliders to tweak sizes and spacing and randomize the pictures.

Yes, you have to request an invite to get access to the moodboard feature. If you definitely need something that'll generate a board for print output though, I don't think it's what you're looking for.

I use InDesign at work because colleagues do, but on OSX you can also use Keynote because it's fast and powerful or also Posterino but it only supports images.

InDesign definitely sounds like the best program to use out of the Adobe line up I just wanted something even easier and faster. Posterino seems to be more of a mess like a collage rather than a mood board.

Thanks for the suggestions I might try Keynote out!

This is great for spit balling and we do virtually the same thing on a physical wall. But I was looking for a program that would create an output like this: http://note.io/TeN625

It's a fine tuned mood board that we use for presentations and meetings. You would be able to change the size of the squares/rectangles and reorder the images on the fly.
