It looks pretty, but how is this friendlier? It is much harder to figure out what is a form element now. I almost missed the radio buttons entirely.

  This. The contrast is so low on the radio & checkboxes that people will miss 'em.

  The contrast is horrible but easily fixed. With this you can style it however you want, plus the default tap/click areas are much larger.

With a JavaScript-based fallback, you can get much of this working in IE8. For example, Checked Polyfill should do the trick. (Full disclosure: I wrote this fallback.)
