What an awful marketing site. Would it be possible to read more than 5 words about your app before making me download it?
Exactly my words. No clue what it is.
Exactly. I am not wasting the MBs on an app that I haven't a clue on what it does.
I'd love to know what this actually does....
It's a media center app, to watch your local media files :)
So it should say that. Especially since popcorn announced a release yesterday. Context is key.
Although - totally understand if they don't/didn't know about popcorn. More context is usually better though when it comes to these products.
I've changed the line a bit, hopefully now it's easier to understand!
Anyone remember Front Row?
This is gorgeous, and it might finally be the media center solution I'm looking for...but until certain features are added, I won't be dumping Plex.
It needs DTS/Dolby/AC3 pass-through support, a search function, movie poster/artwork replacement options and better TV show support.
As of right now, the home screen cycles though screenshots from upcoming/recent movies, it would be nice if it used shots from your library instead.
If they can make a really nice iPad/iPhone/Android companion/remote control application for this, I might be sold.
Hey Andy!
Thanks for the review!.
DTS/Dolby/AC3 should be supported as we use the VLCKit framework
Thanks!
Is this going to be a replacement for Plex? Are you planning on trying to get it onto Roku?
Sort of!. Not planning anything related to Roku for now.
Thanks for the response Jonatan, I'll post an in-depth review at some point and let you guys know when I do it on Twitter.
I'd really love to see a search function inside of the app itself. I imagine that it could work very simply: whenever you start typing within the Movie or TV Show browse view, the app could scroll to whichever movie/tv show that you are typing.
I have had a couple of TV Shows/Movies that haven't been recognized, but it's not a big deal. I was referring to the scrolling backgrounds that are decorating the app as you browse. They seem to be sourced from recent/upcoming movies and it would be nice if they were sourced from the shows/movies that the app detects that you have instead. It would make the app feel more personalized based on your library.
Hmm. I launched Squire a few times and the dock icon immediately disappears. The Squire help stays put in the menu bar though. I added my movies folder but after searching a couple minutes it recognize 12 Angry Men or 12 Years A Slave, or 21 Jump Street. In that time I wasn't able to figure out how to actually watch anything. Does it only play movies it recognizes?
Glad you guys released a beta, this has been a pretty poor experience so far. Needs a lot of work.
Hey Aaron,
I understand your frustration. We initially had the idea to put everything in one app (main app + helper) but after some opinions and our own use experience, it seems like a bad idea.
Also, for recognition there's something wrong as well. Our servers go hammered due to the excessive traffic and petitions, and this resulted in timeouts and wrong recognition problems. We're trying to fix this ASAP!
Sorry about the troubles.
You are right guys. This site was supposed to be a very simple website, just to tease a bit. We were't going to upload any beta, as we wanted to go directly to the MAS. But everything changed on our side and we had to fix things and improvise.
For now I've changed a bit the line with something that shortly explains it: "Watch your local media files in a beautiful way.". Let me know what do you think and thanks for your comments!
That's definitely better. Now I have an idea of what it actually does. It's supposed to be a replacement for something like VLC then?
It's more like XBMC or Plex instead. A media center application, basically.
I love how this tells me absolutely nothing about anything /s
