Wow! That's an incredible example of theft. I'm impressed with both works, for two very different reasons.
Just remember, you're so good that others are copying you.
Thank you Devin! I know! Just strange if he earned money with it..
This isn't theft. He's copying your style, but surely you also copy styles. Your work isn't totally original and new either.
You can't steal style. The D, A and g while they may look similar they have their differences. The whole typography world is moved by small differences who make big impact. That's how you can have dozens of typos that come from 3 o 4 schools.
If you make your work public. You will be copied. Nature of the game. It's a waste of time, energy and effort trying to stop it. Just keep doing good work and move on. A single piece of work can be copied, but no one can copy a body of work.
Absolutely right!
Looks like he's just a student exploring new styles. Found his Behance - and he even Appreciated your original. Not sure if his was for a real job, or just messing around - but imitation is the most sincere form of flattery?
Agree with you!
This was his description on Instagram. "Super stoked on this hand drawn lettering I did, an identity piece for a NYC based dj. This technique is still super new to me but its a blast to do. #thedailytype #typography #handlettering #goodtype"
So it sounds like he's selling it, which does make it theft rather than 'taking inspiration and playing around'.
Yes his intention was to sell it, he just mailed me with his apologies and he will edit it.
Actually, he didn't steal something, he just copied it ;-)
Take it as a compliment, challenge him to take it a step further and make it better, more unique for this DJ.
They must really like your work, Paul!
Seems like a student, you should compliment his efforts haha ;) maybe it'll spark a little inspiration for him to push it further to something more original?
Yeah! he mailed me with his apologies and just mailed him back he can always send me his work for feedback. "Air is cleared"
Both are very nice. I think this is more of a case of super heavily inspired by then theft. When I clicked this I expected to see the exact same logotype. Thats life :) Besides where would companies be if they couldn't copy good things about each other's work?
