I wholeheartedly disagree with photoshop and illustrator being great. All Adobe products are mediocre. The only reason they are widely used by designers is because the number of companies that have created similar and competing software is very slim. The ones that have done so have not done a good job with it because they don't get user experience.

Sketch blows photoshop out of the water without question. They are one example of a competing company doing it better than Adobe and they have only been around for a few years. Photoshop has been around for decades yet their software is still mediocre at best. Adobe is simply a shit company. They are like microsoft, dominant for a period of time, but unable to adapt to the changes in the user interface climate.

People think Adobe products are great because they have no other competing products to compare it to. They are the monopoly in pro design tools. However, if more companies like Sketch keep popping up, they will no longer occupy the throne.

I am missing a decent font management/browser in Photoshop. Any plugins you can recommend?

    1) a way to handle fluid, responsive designs

    2) reusable elements/symbols/master pages

    3) a way to prototype animations/transitions

I really wish illustrator would introduce a better system for linked files and embedded images, helping to reduce the file size of a document. I'd also like to see a stronger focus on typography and reusable styles. Basically I want it to be more like indesign.

I still don't know how people are using photoshop for designing, the speed and freedom of illustrator makes photoshop so painful to use in comparison.

I’m a big fan of Illustrator, but when it comes to producing bitmap image assets (needed for some web and most native app design), Illustrator doesn’t cut it.

Illustrator doesn’t dither gradients and has worse gradient rendering, has poor antialiasing, and lacks lots of pixel level controls and high quality layer styles (when outputting for screen).

Illustrator is great, but only in tandem with Photoshop, if you care about the quality of output and need PNGs.

I think we’re producing different kind of assets, which would explain why you would consider photoshop the tool for your particular needs. I might consider photoshop a good tool for art-working designs to make sure they are 100% pixel perfect but to be honest I would still design the assets in illustrator and export them to photoshop and make any adjustments there.

I’ve heard the argument about pixel control before but once you turn on snap-to-pixel I honestly don’t think there’s really that much of a difference. I’m not too sensitive about gradients as I don’t find myself using them that much so you could be right on that point. But that gradient-mesh tool is pretty awesome in illustrator, if you’re that way inclined ;)

I think it’s fairly easy to pull out a few examples of why photoshop is better but I really think it depends on the type of work you produce so for me not having tools like blending, pathfinder, custom-grid, split-to-grid, transform etc., would just make using photoshop too painful. Never mind having the huge art-board / custom art-boards and also the speed of working in vectors.

As I said there’s a lot I would do to improve illustrator but it’s still my design tool of choice for the moment.

Once you’ve spotted the difference, it can be hard to un-see it.

Oh yep, I love that stuff as well, which is why I usually have Illustrator and Photoshop open, and move paths between them when I need to do something Illustrator’s better suited for.

A real smart objects ... that you can design one element (e.g. menu) in separate psd, than it will be automatically updated into all separate / remaining psds.

    Just this.

Built-in version of Chrome so I can do in-browser design in it while being able to use typical Adobe tools for appending stuff on photos when I need to pass it to others for review oh god this is the longest run-on sentence ever.

I wish there was a CROSS-OS design app that can deal with vector and bitmap graphics at the same time.

I'm tired of these just-Mac apps and all of the "with these 4-5 apps you can do every type of design" business models.

i would love to see interaction / animation - in Sketch app. Sketch answered so many of my issues with Photoshop. I'm sure the Bohemian team would do an incredible job adding some sort of interaction / animation element to Sketch.

Yep, Sketch would be a great basis for my ideal design tool… it already gets an awful lot right.

I am sure they the "Sketch people" are busy dealing with this challenge as well (among other great stuff that is)

Basic scripting for code generated images. I'm currently making a catalogue, if I could make a layout block, then copy it a few times, then magically fill in the content from a table like interface that would be ballin.

For the Adobe apps: Anything that has been achieved in user experience within the last 10 years :(

For Illustrator: Simpler exporting of multiple artboards as SVGs would be such a help. Also, I find myself switching back and forth between RGB (to throw in hex codes) & HSB (to manipulate colours) almost constantly, so I'd like to be able to display both at the same time.

It would be great for these applications to do more with SVG animation and masking.

eg: If I was to add an image to a design and add an a diamond shape to it. Then on export I would have the option to export the image, mask and corresponding CSS.

I'd like Sketch to fix their justifying text. Used to be so easy to make navbars in Photoshop.

Ease of use. A series of 5 keyboard shortcuts just doesn't do the job for me.
