Ask DN: Expand/Collapse List Items

over 7 years ago from , Product Designer

How do you all typically indicate an expandable list? The specific case I'm working on is on iOS. Do you use + and - icons, arrow icons (if so which direction do you point them), text, or something else?

In my specific case I believe a + and - icon could cause confusion because the user may think they are adding an item with + rather than expanding the list.

Thanks for your input!

It always depends on application style. But quite common way is to use down arrow IF it's collapsed (so by clicking this you will expand items list) and up arrow IF it's expanded (so by clicking this you will collapse items list).

+/- is fine as well but still - this all depends on Application style.
