I'm all about Pilot Fineliners these days. Not a fancy designery pen, but it performs exceptionally. And check out that rad packaging!

Lately I'm really into these Fabriano Glue bound dot grid notebooks which are cheap, the right size, great subtle dot pattern and the pages tear out easily which I like.

I have a painting a friend did on a thin wooden block, that I have repurposed into my official sketching board. (See above.)

I prefer to print out dotted grids or device templates on 8.5 x 11. (Like you mentioned, it is comfortable to draw on.) I use a mix of pencils/pens.

My two favorites are the Prismacolor Cool Grey markers, (which range from 10% to 100%), and a varied set of liners (like a Sakura Pigma Micron Set).

Rhodia Dot Pad and a variety of Pigma Micron and Pigma Graphic (1,2,3) pens. Might throw in a gray marker… depends.

Lately at the office I've been a fan of Whitelines.

I'm still getting used to them, but the weight is decent, and they scan pretty well if I'm running and gunning. There's a "Link" version you can link up with their app to upload PDFs to Evernote, which sounds interesting.

Aside from Sharpies and Copic, I really love the Pilot G-tec series. They're super fine, cheap, refillable, and so on. I suppose it helps there's a pile of them in office just lying there...

I use Rhodia Dot Pads for my notepads, they're like 5 bucks or something crazy cheap.

I use Copic Multiliners for all my sketching. They have a great line quality, I can refill them, change tips, and they work with their colored markers.

I use Pen&Ink Fountain pen for most sketching and 0.5mm Koh-i-noor pencil. I sketch on a Maruman Mnemosyne Grid Notebook. I love the paper quality and feel.

Pencils for quick idea and pen to fill in some detail and Copic grey markers.

I've been using Microns and the Behance Dot Grid sketch books and have been pretty happy. I recently purchased UX Sketchbooks and App Sketchbooks. I'm eager to see how well they perform. The paper seem a little thin and I'm worried about bleed through.

For pens: whatever is lying around - it's just a sketch.

I do a lot of UI sketching. Here are my two tool sets:

If someone else is paying:

• Quattro Journal, Grid for straight lines and nice spacing (if you're sketching UIs I can't recommend this one enough)
• Prismacolor Premier Fineliners for outlines
• Copic Sketch Markers for shadows, highlights and where ever else needed (I primarily use the toner gray)

If I'm paying:

• Blank computer paper
• Black Bic ballpoint

A professor I had for a sketching class made us spend half the semester only using these two tools—you'd be amazed at how versatile they really are.

I use Pigma Microns for inking illustrations, but I much prefer a cheap Uniball Jetstream for writing and UI sketching. It's much smoother and just flows like no other pen I've used. Would never illustrate with it, since the ink isn't archival, but that's irrelevant for UI stuff.

I use Sharpies (mostly black) and simple 8.5x11" sheets of paper. It really helps me focus on doing a lot of drawings and trying many ideas rather than getting everything perfect. Then I move to OmniGraffle or more recently Sketch.
