Anyone got a patebin etc that's not on Medium?

Personally I don't feel that the platform deserves $5 (US) per month from me.

That's an odd statement to make considering that money goes to the author of the article you're wanting to read. How good do the articles need to be in order for them to deserve payment?

It's more that at $5/month in usd, that becomes over $7/mo in AUD, which then starts edging towards the costs of services like spotify/netflix. Which is preposterous if you compare the kind of content you're receiving.

And beyond that, most content that's published on Medium is mostly what you'd consider a passing fancy - I don't mind at all not reading it - so unless you're interested in reading these things flat out all day, it's a lot of money to spend if you only catch one or two medium links every other day.

So, not really odd. Pretty standard imo.

You’ve missed the point completely. You don’t like Medium’s price, totally fine. Don’t pay for it. Don’t like it? Take it up with them.

Medium uses that measly $5 to pay the author of this article (me). So you effectively asked someone to steal it for you in the comments. Odd indeed.

And while the value you personally ascribe to Medium is completely beside the point, it’s worth mentioning your attitude toward the cost is preposterous. $5/mo for a platform where you admit to reading 30 articles a month is more than reasonable. And “edging toward Netflix?? Medium costs 60% less than Netflix (which is a completely unrelated expense and nonsensical to even compare).

So yes, your request to effectively steal while scoffing at $5/mo being unreasonable is totally odd and nowhere near standard or ethical.

lol, I haven't missed the point at all. The original point is that other subscription reading services start and stay at around 99c/mo, which honestly is a fair price point. $5, is not, in my opinion.

That aside, just because I've clicked 30 links (which is reasonable, considering every aggregation service now has people submitting their own articles all the time) doesn't mean 30 articles read... Most don't cut the mustard enough to care about, maybe one or two do.

So that's five bucks a month for one or two worthwhile articles. It's the same reason I don't pay for the NY Times or others, whereas I do pay for subscriptions where I know the content is mainly consistently worthwhile.

But don't worry. Judging from this sort of reaction, I don't want to give your article that five dollars anyway. It's not because your content isn't worth it - maybe it is one of the two articles a month I might think aren't horseshit. It's more because you're deciding that we should move away from using the internet as a free platform for expressing ideas, and now supporting a subscription-based model for all content.

Which, for some content (as I've mentioned) is understandable. Some things are worth paying for when they prove to be of value.

I'd propose that subscribing to decent authors might be something I'd consider - but a blanket subscription to 99% snot isn't something I want.

So don't get pissy. Maybe your story isn't snot, it likely isn't. But for $5 I don't care enough to see. You don't need to feel personally attacked that I'm "stealing" from you though, haha. I'll just as happily not read it and continue with my day.
