Mike Monteiro has some great stuff ("Design is a Job" is even one of my favorite design books) but he's kinda going off the deep end lately. The more opinions and ideologies I read from him, the more I'm convinced that he's doing more harm to this industry than good. I mean, check out the Mule Design google reviews. Pretty rough stuff.

Yikes, I read a bunch. It must really mess with your head when you're angry that the world isn't exactly the way you want it to be. (Or that's just my cynicism talking.)

Did ya'll read the post? It's actually pretty good content that would help designers respond to feedback.

I've seen some things with Monteiro I don't like from an ideology standpoint, but like Adam says, he has some really good content for designers out there.

As for google reviews, they are all from 2 years ago, and I guarantee some of them are bs from people piling on.

Yeah, absolutely, it's a good article! Probably should have pointed that out in my original post. There's some good advice there!

How so? Most of his opinions these days are aimed at designers working in-house with large tech companies or corporations, not the design industry in general.

The work I've browsed of his was mediocre—some almost looking like off-the-rack grid-based templates. He's good at selling himself as a thought leader though — so maybe he's on to something.

I've never even seen his work, since Mule doesn't post any on their site. Where'd you find it?

A project was posted on designer news a year or two ago. Back then they had stuff on their website, I think.

Now it's all about how smart and woke Mike Monteiro is.

Found an old DN thread about Stanford's site (https://www.stanford.edu). For an average agency this isn't unusual. The work is nothing groundbreaking, but fine. But for someone who talks the way Monteiro does? (moving humanity forward, design ethics, how we're 'craftsmen', etc).. I'm not seeing that translate to exceptional work.

Worse it perpetuates the designer-as-asshole mythology. At least Steve Jorbz rolled up his sleeves and delivered us the iPhone (and much of the touch input convention w it).

When you finally see it, you'll understand why.
