Designer News Subreddit

4 years ago from

As you guys probably noticed already, there are a lot of unhappy users on Designers News due to the total lack of moderation. Some of us have started a subreddit, where we, the users, can moderate the content to ensure a healthy dose of daily fresh content.

You can join here: https://www.reddit.com/r/DesignNews

If you would like to help moderate, please comment your Reddit username, and we'll gladly add you.

So far 130+ people have subscribed to the subreddit in under 24h, so there clearly is demand for this. Hope to see some good content submissions, and more volunteers for moderation. We can turn this into a valuable resource for all of us.

My suggestions would be to please lay some ground rules/community expectations to avoid it becoming too Reddit-esque.

Awesome idea. DN feels like it's been abused/deserted for a long while now. I want good content again!

That is exactly how I was feeling about DN in the past 1-2 months. I come back regularly and it looked very deserted... which is :(

I have already joined DesignNews! Let's go :)

I see the point of setting up reddit but on the other hand, a different context changes how people interact... I'm afraid that our communication will be karma-driven, filled with corny reddit jokes from now on.

Damn we had something special in here. How come Hacker News can work so well and Designer News not?

So true, we had a great thing going to for a long time. It was sold, and treated as a job board, and here we are.

if more of you posted fresh links maybe there'd be less complaining. Why aren't you submitting links/news? You only come for discussion? The content has to come from somewhere

Bummed to see this happen but at the same time, for now, the content on the Subreddit looks good. It really felt like this was a long time coming. I've lurked here for 3-4 years, been posting for maybe a little over a year. I don't know how many times I reported spam posts but it was getting ridiculous. The top content most of the times is absolutely shit and feels heavily as if the company behind the post just got a few of their employees to bump it up.

I really like the community that DN used to be. I feel there's more then enough of that stuff for dedicated programmers, such as HN, but it's kinda missing for designers. At least if you don't want to join hard-to-keep-up Slack's/Discords/Spectrum-whatever chats.

I love this site and have for years. It'll be a shame to lose it. Reddit can be a wasteland and over political. I'll join you there but it won't be the same... is there no way to keep DN alive?

yeah companies can't pay volunteered mods to boost their articles for seo on reddit, it's not going to be the same.

I'm not sure where you've got this from. I've been a mod on DN for a few years now and have never once heard about this. Have I been missing out on some money‽ (I doubt it.)

FYI, mods can't boost a post.

Actually, DN mods can't sticky a post on this site. They can do it on Reddit, though.

May I ask why? I don't run DN. I volunteer to remove spam and correct small things like spelling mistakes in post titles.

Are you being serious George? Not very nice is it. Also, your other comment is completely wrong as well. Mods get paid nothing, for anything. All moderation is done in our spare time.

One of the main rules on DN is "Be nice". You're falling very short of this.

because reddit is a better place for sharing some links? what the hell. Unnecessary. DN serves purpose, just keep sharing fresh links. Or at least, there are allllready design subreddits, probably frequented by same people. But DN is more active for fresh links which is why it rose to exist in the first place.
