I commented on the Medium article itself, but thought it was worth posting here as well.

Instead of using Pathfinder, I highly recommend using the Shape Builder Tool (Shift+M) which gives you all the power of Pathfinder but with a lot more control. It completely transformed how I build shapes in Illustrator, but for some reason a lot of people who use Illustrator don't know about it.
