  That is really odd, especially for a "web" company their size.
  Maybe it was the easiest way for the team managing the launch to update the marketing site.

  internet.org by facebook is also Wordpress.

    Facebook's blog (http://newsroom.fb.com/) runs on Wordpress, too – as does the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative (https://chanzuckerberg.com/).
    In case you're interested, Wordpress VIP has a list of their highest profile clients: https://vip.wordpress.com/clients/
    Some pretty surprising ones in there: News Corp, TIME, Skype, Microsoft Studios etc.

  Why weird? Wordpress is probably the easiest way to run a blog for a company that size. Years of proper documentation, accepts vanilla PHP if necessary, fully customisable, plug-in friendly...etc.

  Wordpress is a pretty good CMS if you need something that is easy to setup and easy to use. The marketing site doesn't appear to have any special functionality.
