I couldn't have anticipated I'd have so many readers but the feedback is great! I really appreciate everyone who has taken time to leave comments.

Clearly, this redesign isn't perfect and makes some big tradeoffs. I'm thinking I'll do a short follow up piece later on to address the responses.
